Last year Lizzie really messed up with Lydia’s bday gift. Do you think she got it right this year?
I think she took time off from Darcy and her company and took Lydia to see Jane in New York. And tonight they’ll go to all the clubs Lydia drags them to and actually have a really good time. No swimmers, just sisters.
Of course, the next morning they’ll remember they totally forgot about Mary, but that’s another story.
On the plane ride home, Lydia will tell her what a great time she had, and it’s okay that she didn’t get her any gift, the trip was amazing and better than anything she could have hoped for. Then Lizzie will slide a present out of her carry-on, not as well wrapped this time, because she did it herself, but of a familiar shape. She’ll hand it to Lydia, and Lydia will look hesitant, but Lizzie will insist, a small smile, quietly self-assured. When Lydia unwraps her gift, she’ll find a copy of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Old, well-read, and with the name “Lizzie Bennet” scrawled in crayon on the inside. I know it isn’t the movie, Lizzie will say, but I think you’ll like it all the same. And Lydia will smile back at her, because she knows she will too.
